Share an Evening with Dr. Phil Haydon of Sail for Epilepsy
The Rotary Club of Reading is honored to have Dr. Phil Haydon of Sail For Epilepsy share an evening with us on Monday, April 11, at 6pm. Dr. Haydon will be with us at The Charles, 614 Main Street, Reading. We will enjoy a lovely dinner and cash bar will be available.
Please RSVP by Thursday, April 7 to Lisa Gibbs at lisa@samanthasharvest.org with ROTARY SPEAKER in the subject line so as not to miss anyone (this is super important as I get MANY emails each day and don't want to miss anyone!).
Please see below for more information about Dr. Haydon and Sail For Epilepsy. We look forward to hosting many friends from the Reading/North Reading Chamber!
When Phil Haydon was 15, an accident caused a depressed compound fracture of his skull, which triggered post-traumatic epilepsy. For several years he suffered from tonic-clonic seizures but has been fortunate to have his epilepsy medically controlled for over 40 years. Phil currently runs an active laboratory researching a range of neurological disorders, including epilepsy, as the Chair of the Department of Neurosciences at Tufts University School of Medicine, in Boston. Now, he wants to do more to give back to the epilepsy community.
An experienced short-handed sailor who has successfully completed the Bermuda 1-2 twice, Phil has started the non-profit organization Sail For Epilepsy with a mission to inspire people with epilepsy to take One More Step towards achieving a fuller life, with the necessary safety measures in place. Phil’s One More Step is to sail the oceans of the world to:
- inspire people with epilepsy
- raise funds to support research for a cure
- promote awareness of epilepsy and educate the public
Participants in the One More Step Challenge become Virtual Shipmates and have their name added to the boat so they can join the voyage. Virtual Shipmates may also receive a live video call from Phil while he’s offshore or have their epilepsy story featured. Starting in May 2022, Phil and a small crew will sail from Florida to the Azores, on to Portugal and then to Spain and Morocco before returning to the Caribbean. During port stops, local organizations will host events with Sail For Epilepsy to raise awareness about epilepsy and educate the general public. Follow the Sail For Epilepsy voyage and learn more at:
